I frequently get asked what hypnosis is, how it can help and if indeed it is real so I thought I’d give my thoughts and explain more.
Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed and focused state where the mind is able to absorb positive suggestions and then implement these changes. Everyone has experienced a hypnotic phenomenon or trance when being totally absorbed in a book, TV show or even driving the same route back to home (that you could do with your eyes closed!). You tune out distractions (often the kids/partner nagging etc.) and only realise when the credit’s roll or that you are at your front door again with a vague memory of how you got there. It’s nothing to be overly concerned about, it just shows that you are indeed able to achieve such a state and rather than zoning out, you could zone in on the areas of your life that needs fixing rather than plugging that gap with a distraction.
So how can it help?
Well, your body and mind are naturally developed to heal. When you get a cut you automatically react (to prevent more injury) and in time it heals. The mind is not too different in this respect! The only main difference is sometimes how we react to something can compound the matter rather than improve it. For example, if you were to see a spider and it jumped, the unexpected movement may make you react too (flinching is a natural instinct – not a fear). However, if you were to only recall the negative emotion and allow this to become ‘normal’ then whenever you see a spider or hear the word you will instantly clam up and start to get nervous (a habit is forming as a phobia). In many cases a spider has no intent on harming you, you’re not exactly going to fit in its tummy! However you could be driving along and a spider drops down from the visor and you lose all control and crash – when you know that really you would be better off brushing it aside and remaining calm.
So suppose you change that broken record for this reaction? What if you were to become confident and at ease with the thing that you feared? You realise that it’s not going to harm you, and you are in control. You may not ever love the thing that you feared (in this case spiders), but you will be tolerant and not lose it when you see one! Wouldn’t that be a better way to be?
There’s a bit of debate over whether hypnosis is real. The mind is capable of incredible, wonderful things that honestly we can only begin to fathom. The power of imagination, visualisation, concentration and suggestion are potent when combined. It would be wrong to be dismissive of hypnosis when clearly in many cases it can prove effective. I have seen many miracles happen before my eyes through the application of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
For some it is healthy to be a little skeptical but all I ask is to remain with an open mind. If you’ve tried other treatments and still the problem occurs, it may be the key that fits that particular lock. I wouldn’t offer assistance to anyone that I don’t believe I could help or the approach wouldn’t be correct. Ultimately you can look at the past successes and you can make your own mind up – and if you have any need, you can always call or email me.
